JR....I totally agree. Our idols are beautiful to us and we cover them up in a million different ways to look good. Pete does a great job of getting to the root of what his idols truly are.

At PM (www.route59.org) we don't "hammer" on this. But it's an often overlooked theme in the Christian walk. Something demanding our worship other than God. We sacrifice a lot for those beautiful idols.

This sounds like a great read and I already ordered a copy. The short description rings true, especially talking about the ideas behind idols. Idols are one of those abstract Christian ideas that most people never put a truly concrete idea on. They don't realize what they are idolizing, or that its something much more real than a literal golden calf. I'm looking forward to this read, especially since its something I've been realizing is much more real than I would have thought, and I've been finding idols in my own life and behavior. I wasn't the hugest fan of Blue Like Jazz, so I'm a bit still in the dark as to why it did become such a huge hit. Perhaps just the nature of our culture? Just like you said, the Spiritual Memoir genre seems to be detached and disjointed. Perhaps this is why I wasn't a huge fan. It came across to me as a young guy just throwing some ideas out there as opposed to an older wiser fellow attempting to lead people in where to go with the ideas. I guess thats not a bad thing, Miller is a relatively young guy. We shouldn't expect the world from someone as relatively young as him. In that respect though, his ideas were true and real. I look forward to his future work as well..

Long reply.. hah. hope you have good day bro
