Legacy

A few weeks ago I was finishing up some thoughts I had on a book. I said, “You can either welcome change and reach out to the next generation or you can be against it and by doing so reject the next generation.”

I’ve been fortunate in my life to have a lot of people reach out to me. My best man in my wedding was 5 years older than me and was a great mentor to me during high school and college. For the past few years every worship team I’ve been involved with has consisted of people mostly older than me, and all of them have welcomed me in ways I never could have imagined. I think there is something to what I was saying. Had they not welcomed me and reached out to me, I would have rejected them.

I was reading about a similar journey of another guy. Rick Warren and Rick Muchow reached out to him early on in ministry. Both of these men simply get “it”.

They understand what it means to leave a legacy. It isn’t about giving a bunch of money to humanitarian efforts. It isn’t about having a bunch of landmarks named after you.

It is about relationships.

It is about reaching out to the next generation and passing the torch that was passed to you.

good stuff. it’s interesting b/c that age difference, they’re just my everyday friends~ but we learn from each other b/c we realize that we’ve come from different walks of life and have something to offer.

but i’ve have my share of mentors as well~ one of them wrote my favorite book in the world and i remember when i first read it sitting in his and his wife’s living room pouring over the ideas and trying to understand and pray through it. they’re still good friends today, and i visit them when i can.

but there have been so many who’ve been there pulling me through…through churches, family even, when i needed someone to step in.

and the generation i connect w/ younger? the ones that are my sisters age- teenagers…trying figure themselves out. you’re right, relationship is SO important and i value the moments i can “pass the torch”

    sorry for the long response….

ty…building a better world starts by investing in one person at a time. people invested in me, and in turn, i feel like it is my responsibility to pass the torch. build a better tomorrow, by building people up today. love you bro.

I too have benefited from older influence throughout my life. In fact, I’ve returned the favor and spent the last 8+ years of my life with a group of (at the beginning, middle schoolers) young men who all recently graduated high school. It was amazing to be on the other end of the table and quite a life journey for us all. I’ve created relationships that go beyond the normalcy.
