Sarah Palin Puts Alaska on the Map

Many of you know I was in Alaska a few weeks ago. Let me clear the rumor mill…I did not see her while I was there, and my in laws have never met her. There are actually over 500,000 people in Alaska. Her nomination for Vice President has been on my mind a lot, BUT on this post I think I won’t share my opinion. I tend to do that with my posts on politics and this time I shall stay silent. I will however point you in a few different directions.
- Sarah Palin spent a lot of time in her speech pointing out all the issues with Barack Obama. I found an article that looks into the facts of those issues. Read it HERE.
- Should we be surprised that Brian McLaren was mostly disgusted with Palin’s speech? No matter where you stand his thoughts are interesting.
- My Alaskan mom shares what it was like to see a fellow Alaskan on the international stage Wednesday night.
- Both Jim Wallis and Eugene Cho are concerned about the lack of diversity represented in the crowd at the Republican Convention.
- Randy Elrod says that Palin delivered an extraordinary speech.
- Here are some thoughts on Palin from a Hillary backer.
- Did you know that Palin only has an undergraduate degree?
- Here is a tour of Palin’s hometown, Wasilla, Alaska.
- Did you know that every Vice Presidential and Presidential candidate from the past 25 years (other than George H. Bush) has at least a Master’s degree? (k maybe my opinion is partially in there)
- With all that said. I am proud to live in a country where 2 great leaders (Obama and Palin) can go from unknown to the Presidential ticket in 8 years. I know that the RNC crowd boo’d this about Obama, but I still think our country should be applauded for both people (crap, I know…more opinion from me).
And there you have my political post with no some opinions.
So I wonder…now that we’ve been introduced to her via a televised speech…
Tyler Braun.
i still think it’s tina fey.
This subject is HUGE!! Even in Africa I have kept up on it… I am excited as well to live in a country where a mother and woman of such conservative beleifs can be in this penis size battle
I do however just can not get over thinking…would we want her as President? Anyway, I apprecate that you post opinions of others it helps give perspective. I think that everyone has such different opinions and for different reasons. I have learned that who i vote for will most benefit ME as a person and as a social worker. ok that is all from me haha…OH lol did you know Puff Daddy did a “there are no black people in Alaska” U Tube post? haha it s funny you should watch it!
I think Palin did exactly what she needed to do the other night. She needed to focus her speech on the campaign at hand and in support of the Republican party. She did that. Period. Regardless of whether you or I agree with her policies is besides the point. She took much of the focus OFF of her self and that was smart. McCain picked her, certainly for a number of political reasons, but one reason that is important is that Palin is in touch with the common voter, the everyday good ol’ boy crowd, which is MOST of America and that was a smart move on his part. Analysts have all voiced these things in some form or another…on both sides, so I think that is a good sign for her- personally.
Eugene- Yeah she does look a lot like Tina Fey….especially when Tina wears glasses.
Brenna- Did you really use the starts with a “p” ends with an “s” word on my blog? wow!
Ash- I agree, she definitely has done a good job of portraying herself as a normal Alaskan and American.
I don’t find Brian McLaren’s “thoughts” interesting. I have no use for him. He’s turning into a Christian Keith Olbermann to me. If he takes a position, I’m comfortable taking the opposite as a kneejerk. I have no idea what his appeal is.
Palin is awesome. I’m calling it now…she’ll be president in four years.
Sorry…”thoughts” is a bit harsh. Not sure why I react so to McLaren. I should have more charity. I just don’t.
I meant interesting very loosely.
Good to know…I found him loosely interesting.
Still really like Palin.
I agree with Jenni. I think she’s awesome and clearly a threat to the Obama camp, which is why his supporters are so defensive.
From unknown to presidential leader …. I am running for president after 8 years from now. Hopefully I am employed by then, otherwise …
She seems down to earth and a “regular person” to me. I’m excited.
should start by saying I’m much more interested in communication than I am politics
i liked her, i also “like” Obama but will be voting for McCain
i thought she did her job and makes the election more interesting
I do wonder about the what IF McCain doesn’t make it through the term
My husband told me people were discussing whether her hair would be up or down on her night to accept, I absolutely loved that it was half up, half down. Take that.
I pretty much hated the CNN camera direction, seriously how many times do we have to see a close up of the same people reacting to something? It’s painful to watch and these people are at the top of their game?
Tyler- did you seriously get a comment from Eugene Cho? welcome to the blog big time and thanks again for doing my homework for me.
Seth- I’ve had the opportunity to hear MacLaren in person, a couple of times. He has challenged and stretched my thinking and made me a better follower of Christ rather than a “church lady.” For that, I”m thankful.
The comments in this article by Victor Davis Hanson (one of my favorite commentators out there) is a must read. Palin is a breath of fresh air, and is the first politician I can recall since Reagan who did not follow the usual path to power… and her Bachelor degree from the U. of Idaho, instead of an Ivy League education, is perfectly fine in my book.

Sarah Palin has set the election on an entirely different trajectory. The dems don’t know what to do with her… folks who have children with disabilities love her… energy advocates have to listen to her whether they like her or not because her state is important to the future direction of our country’s resources… pro-life people had to breathe a sigh of relief, and women all across America have to believe that a woman in the Vice Presidency will be a help to their futures related to equal pay for equal work. She doesn’t run with the Washington crowd, and she comes across as being very easy to relate to. In fact, I think she has a charisma that will only enhance the republican ticket. Before the RNC, I thought the election would be close with Obama/Biden winning. Now, I think all bets are off. I’m almost inclined to believe that those dems who “hold tightly to their guns and religion” have found their man… er, woman to be their candidate.
I have no crystal ball. All I know is, the media (read: those from a politically different persuasion) has no idea what to do with her, and even without reading McClaren, I’m pretty sure the evangelical left will find little to rejoice about with this woman. I think McCain’s pick was devastating and shrewd.
Again, Hanson is lucid in his analysis about Palin and her naysayers.

I LOVE HER!!! The verse that keeps coming to my mind is “you have been sent to the kingdom for such a time as this”…Just like the story of Esther…. Whether she wins the election or not….. America is viewing a very intelligent and wise woman. One with a heart to serve the people and not herself. She is real and down to earth and understands the “small” people of America. John and Sarah have my vote!
Here is a video that believers should watch. The quality is poor, but the content is important. It gives spiritual insight into Sarah Palin.
This was taken in her original home church, in Wasilla, AK, this summer.
