“Descended into hell” only means Jesus went to the grave. It derives from the fact that the KJV translated “Hades” as “Hell.” Hades was simply the Greek term for the place where everybody goes after death. “Because you will not leave my soul in Hades, nor permit your Holy One to experience decay.” (KJV says “in Hell”, but we’re obviously talking about the grave here)

Some would connect it to the passage in 1 Peter 3 that speaks of Christ preaching to the Spirits in Prison, but I think those connections are erroneous.

When the Creed was written Catholic was the only church. Catholic also means universal…so it is speaking of the church of believers not just Catholics.

The descended into hell part is spoken of in Ephesians I believe, so it has premise.

I must admit being baffled by the “holy Catholic church” line, every time we use the creed in church, too. Can you illuminate this for us?

I’m just curious how many people at church were thrown by the “descended into hell” part, to say nothing of the “holy catholic church” stuff.
