The John 3:16 one was interesting ... not surprising but interesting. Just think of all the people that will no longer have to look that up.

As for the abuse issue ... it drives me crazy when pastors/ church leaders make statements like this. Yes, I want to live a life that is in accordance with what the Bible teaches .. and I'm certainly not seminary trained ... but the Bible speaks so much more about things like grumbling, complaining, gossip ... the "small sins", and we conveniently let these sins destroy churches while saying nothing ... and then to make an issue out of something as horrific as abuse in a sacred marriage covenant ... leaving these women to feel like they are displeasing or worse yet, disobeying God if they divorce a man who has stolen the very image of God that He placed in her ... making her believe that she is completely worthless. And truly from my friends who have been battered women ... it is the emotional abuse that is harder to recover from than the physical. In my friend's words, the broken bones heal more quickly. It reminds me of the Pharisees wanting to stone the adulteress woman. Jesus would show grace and love to these women, and if they sinned in divorcing their husbands, in order to finally accept Christ's love and their worth to Him, to save themselves, and even their own children, I know His grace is sufficient to cover that, as well.

Ash - Jesus actually used the word "pornea", which really only does apply to sexual unfaithfulness. But aside from the nitpicking, I agree with you.

First off, yes, I think that abuse is grounds for divorce. Remember Jesus used the term unfaithfulness, not "cheating"- and abuse is unfaithful...to the vows two people made. Certainly His plan is redemption and restoration but when that person refuses to change and continues such awful behaviour, the opposing spouse, man or woman, should be able to walk away...I believe that Pastor is taking the Bible so literally that he is forgetting the Grace that the Cross has to offer. Abuse is unacceptable and it is NOT God's intention for anyone to live through violence in the home like that, destruction of families in NOT in his plan and that will have more damage to a young person or a spouse than divorce will in the end.

2- Thanks for the blogger link, might have some useful tools for me.

You knew I would bite the bait about the eagle lady. Then I bit the bait about Blogger (being as that is my format). Then I bit the bait about the article on abuse/divorce. Maybe you should use a name that has something to do with fishing, lures or bait....just a thought.
