Boy those American Idol judges sure pulled a fast one on Thursday night…13 instead of 12.
I have lost respect for them for at least one week after bringing back Tatiana for the wild card round.
I think the competition will come down to Danny Gokey and Lil Rounds, and if Danny doesn’t win I’ll actually be sad.
Blogs
- Don Miller has a post on what U2 faces everytime they make a new album. It kind of reminds me of the pressure a worship pastor feels.
- A new blog worth checking out: Faithblogging.
- This will make you think: “the myth of the institution-less church.”
- You probably have 150 real friends.
- A book I’m reading in one of my classes is available for a free audio download.
- Mark Batterson has some wonderful thoughts on how to deal with criticism. He also has some great rules for how he writes (probably worth listening to).
News
- Can someone please explain this whole Rush controversy? I don’t get it.
- Octomom has inspired a possible bill in Georgia.
- In these tough economic times some people are “getting by” with $400,000 a year (I just threw up in my mouth over that).
- Christianity Today ran an interesting cover story on “the depression epidemic.”
- The changing economic climate could mean the suburban mega-church will struggle to continue as it has before.

octo-mom…well, the bill isn’t a bad idea in the sense that there isn’t a limit on how many times you can go back. so if the first two didn’t take then when it’s approved by the doctor, go back and try again. there was something in the article though that i thought was important, esp. living here: did the senator seek medical advice? where is getting the premise for this bill? is there are medical expert that speak to the benefit or harm to the bill? as a journalist, tax payer and voter, i think it’s important information that should be medically investigated….
don miller/u2- i’m a u2 fan and i think that his analysis is more personal than anything. u2 does know how to make good music. i think it gets under est. how well “how to dismantle an atomic bomb” really did. the music video for “vertigo” hit top of the chart…won a grammy. they got best album in 2006. so there has definitely been incredible music since joshua tree. pressures? sure. every successful musician or person has them. but i think most people see u2 as a band first then an activist…the fact that they’ve lasted as long as they have doing as well as they have says something. i recently read an article interviewing them…and they all said…they weren’t worried. they have faced changes and challenges over the years but ultimately this is what they love.
obviously i read the article moreso in terms of the band than pastors. i think those pressures could apply to any number of groups…
the institution blog- i think using a “hospital” is a terrible comparison to back up or support his statement. the reason is – ultimately a hospital, while it is a place where people can be treated for illness, it is ultimately a business…a corp. entity w/ a service. so i don’t know that he even understands his analogy. b/ c those who are frustrated w/ the “institution” of the church are frustrated w/ the fact that it’s becoming and corp. company so to speak trying to offer the service of a religion…and not living christ, not going after the heart of what it means to BE the bride of the most high. it’s about a lifestyle…for each person or group, not the “business” of church.
interesting links this week, tyler
The Rush controversy is simple to understand.. The Democrats need a boogeyman. Rush makes an easy target. This allows them to deflect, when needed, from whatever they want the public to turn away from, and towards an “Obama the good guy versus Rush that meanie” vibe. They’ve perfected the concept of the Enemies’ List. For his part, he gets more attention and better ratings, so Rush’s quite happy he’s moved to the top of the list.
