A Dying Faith

John Ortberg recently wrote for the Out of Ur blog. He provided a few snapshots of how people are showing the loss of faith in America, and specifically the numbers that show Christianity dropping in numbers. Here are the examples he provided:

  • The recently released American Religious Identification Survey (ARIS) indicates that faith is going down across the board. The number of people who identify themselves as Christian has decreased by 11 percent in a generation. The single fastest-growing category when it comes to religious affiliation is “None,” which grew from 8 percent to 15 percent since 1990.
  • Twenty years ago, if someone wanted to look for a model of what an effective church might look like in the future, they would generally go to a place like Willow Creek or Saddleback. But these younger leaders said it was no longer apparent where they should go to see what church might look like in another twenty years.
  • A religion reporter for the LA Times wrote an article, and later a book, describing how he lost his faith in the process of covering his beat. He said that article brought in exponentially more positive emails than anything else he’d ever written.

Is the fact that America is losing faith a problem? Well John says, ‘not so fast.’

It’s not a matter of new evidence being introduced that makes the message of Jesus less likely to be true. What makes a living faith cease to be a live option is much more subtle and complex. It often has more to do with cultural shifts and attitudes that move gradually over time until a tipping point suddenly reveals them. The question is not one of Kingdom Anxiety. The Kingdom of God has been doing very well, and will continue to flourish no matter the ebbs of flows from one century and continent to another.”

What do you think? Should we be worried?

When something dies, I think God has a creative way of giving something else new life in its place. When a person becomes a follower of Christ, they enter into a process of dying unto self, in order that a new creature might be found in Christ. When we give our tithes and offerings to God, those things die to us and find new life in the work of God. Under the reign of God, death gives way to new life. That’s why I guess I’m not that worried about a growing number of people checking the “none” box when it comes to religion. An old expression of Christianity is dying, but on the horizon there seems to be a new, more vibrant, expression of Christianity just waiting to be lived-out.

I tell you what, if Christians would stop being so comfortable, get on their knees and truly believe the truths of the Bible, perhaps God would see we have faith and move! Christians have gotten so comfortable that they have forgotten that following Christ is hard, it includes suffering on a level, it includes loneliness, and every other negative thing that Jesus had to go through on this earth. He wasn’t popular, not everyone liked what He had to say, but He spoke the truth out of obedience. That is what we are called to do as well as followers of Christ. Evangelical America is so far gone some days; they need to stop trying to conform their messeges to the masses and speak the truth of the Bible which it was intended for. I am so tired of watching churches preach a relevant messege for todays audience and all they end up doing is watering down the gospel. People are hungry, and churches today are not feedig the flock what it needs to, to be able to fill them. It does not surprise me at all that church attendance and affiliatons are down. Why would I go somewhere to get filled up spiritually if you only feed me pop-culture cumbs, with a dash of gospel in between? That’s just my rant? I bet it’s close to Jesus’ too!

“The number of people who identify themselves as Christian has decreased”…

But that has never been the true measure of Faith anyway…

No certainly faith is much different than a number, but the numbers do still indicate something. I like the way Ric put it, death gives way to life. That is my hope in this case.

I would only start worrying when people stop having compassion for each other. People that care about anything are close to the God they refuse. The way church people are now makes me consider checking the “none” box also, but people are just people and we all “miss it”.

Absolutely not! Because God is in control. God continues to preserve those whom He has called. I am convinced that this preservation and perfecting can happen in a number of ways from multi-site; mega; emergent; and classically small congregations to house churches.

Perhaps the next “model” is no model. Maybe we have come to a place where being part of “the latest and greatest church” isn’t seen as advantageous or maybe the mentality that shops for programs is dying out as people age.

For whatever reason I am going to watch God move in the strange ways He’s done before and be amazed at the outcome.
