Being married to a guy who I've seen 'lead worship' at three or so different churches -- this conversation has come up time and again over the past 12+ years. Honestly, sometimes the singing service strikes me as one of the more bizarre parts of church. Where else do people go and stand and sing for 20-30 minutes? Oh, don't get me wrong. I enjoy it. Quite a bit, actually. But where did this tradition come from and why are we as 'the church' so attached to it? I'm sure you'll answer all those questions in one simple blog post. Thanks. :)

Tyler, this is outside the scope of what you are attempting to do, but I'd be really interested in exploring and unpacking that Deuteronomy passage quite a bit. Because while Yahweh worship was definitely distinct from idol worship, it certainly was not entirely distinct- there would still be common practices etc.

In some circles Deut 12:4 would be used as a basis for why we don't do something because it looks like something another religion does (for example discernmentalist's stance against all things contemplative because it's similar to transcendental meditation).

Anyways, just a thought about how we speak of worship and "not worshipping God in their way."

I wonder how many people inside the church have this foundation?
Reading this helps me feel a little more connected with the bible and old testament worship.
