I'm Not a Big Fan of Quotes…

I’m not a big fan of quotes but lately I’ve been latching onto a few.

The last few months of life have felt heavy. Work is draining, church is struggling, and a few other things in life that are probably best not to be shared here.

I ran across this quote yesterday that gave such a wonderful perspective of God’s faithfulness despite the heaviness of life at times.

“The star of hope is still in the sky when the night is blackest.” -Charles Spurgeon

My church is also going through a lot of transition, and while it doesn’t feel right to divulge all the details of it right now, it is safe to say the tension and struggle is immense. Despite that, ministry still goes on. I don’t lead worship or work with volunteers any less. People still need Jesus no matter what transition or change is taking place in any church. And truly the church does exist to encourage the saints, worship Jesus, and tell the Gospel to those who do not follow The Way. That work still continues, or at least should, no matter what.

“When the preferences of the church members are greater than their passion for the gospel, the church is dying.” -Thom Rainer

These quotes have been a push in the right direction for me: That my preferences in church matter not…That God is still God even when life paints doubts.

What quotes have been a source of encouragement or exhortation for you?

“If you’re passionate about God, you can trust your passions” Erwin McManus. Read Chasing Daylight late last year and that singlehandedly stuck out.

“Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forward.” – Soren Kierkegaard

“Seeking to be in orbit around the Son today instead of the center of my own universe.” – Jay McKenney

“Your life is something opaque, not transparent, as long as you look at it in an ordinary human way. But if you hold it up against the light of God’s goodness, it shines and turns transparent, radiant and bright. And then you ask yourself in amazement: Is this really my own life I see before me?” – Albert Schweitzer

Hey Tyler…don’t have a quote to share off the top of my head, just wanted you to know I’ll be praying for you during the transitions. It’s sad that Jesus didn’t say “In the Church you will have trouble…he said “in this world you will have trouble.” I guess we can take heart, because he has overcome both of them :)

I got three simple ones that have been giving me life for a couple months…

“Someone told me – find a hill you’re willing to die on, and charge the hill.” – Patrick Kelly

“You have nothing to prove, and no one to impress.” – Larry Osbourne

“Doubt your fears. Believe your God.” – PJ, my youth pastor
