A few weeks ago I was finishing up some thoughts I had on a book. I said, “You can either welcome change and reach out to the next generation or you can be against it and by doing so reject the next generation.”
I’ve been fortunate in my life to have a lot of people reach out to me. My best man in my wedding was 5 years older than me and was a great mentor to me during high school and college. For the past few years every worship team I’ve been involved with has consisted of people mostly older than me, and all of them have welcomed me in ways I never could have imagined. I think there is something to what I was saying. Had they not welcomed me and reached out to me, I would have rejected them.
I was reading about a similar journey of another guy. Rick Warren and Rick Muchow reached out to him early on in ministry. Both of these men simply get “it”.
They understand what it means to leave a legacy. It isn’t about giving a bunch of money to humanitarian efforts. It isn’t about having a bunch of landmarks named after you.
It is about relationships.
It is about reaching out to the next generation and passing the torch that was passed to you.
