Fortuitous Bouncing

I added a search box on the sidebar to the right. I’ve had people email me asking if I’ve written about this or that. Feel free to use that box to search for anything on this blog, it is a great tool for that.

Also thanks to those of you who shared some of your painful Summit stories. That is just one example of why I love blogging.

For those of you who think I’m too serious on this blog: please enjoy this (below). Ross, Matt, and I were best friends in high school. We always danced to techno in Ross’ car. We decided it was time to do our first techno video shoot.

I can’t believe I’m actually posting this on my blog.

Making a New Memory

Instead of sharing some of my favorite things from the Summit today I thought I’d share what has been on my heart since it started yesterday.

I’ve anticipated going to the Leadership Summit that Sunset hosts for Willow Creek, ever since I started working there. I have to admit that it isn’t for all positive reasons. You see, 6 years ago a large group from my dad’s former church went to the Leadership Summit and came out with a vision that involved getting rid of my dad. That decision has caused my family and me more pain than any of them will ever know. Many of you don’t know this story because I wrote about it so long ago. You can read about it HERE.

I wanted to create new Summit memories because the old ones feel like a nice strong punch to the stomach.

The past 2 days I’ve walked in the same hallways and I’ve worshiped the same God with some of the people who orchestrated my dad’s removal.

Little did I know that God had a plan for me to finally forgive the people I never thought I’d be able to forgive. I can’t even write this without having all those feelings of pain and hurt come back again. Maybe those feelings will always come back when I think back to those 6 months in 2003, but I know God desires for me to love my brothers and sisters not hate them.

They might have hurt those I care about most in a deep way, but if there is one thing I know about my God…it is that HE FORGIVES and so should I.

Meaning and Significance

Today was the first day of being a satelite host for the Willow Creek Leadership Summit. Aside from saying hi to friends from all over the state, watching the sessions, and eating…I was running around doing all sorts of things to make things go off without a hitch. I’ve been going since 7am and now its 9pm. Wow! What an awesome day.

Special thanks to those of you who came out for dinner after wards, so great to connect and meet new people.

Lots of the Leadership Summit is on philosophy, ideas, and vision casting. It is heady stuff. My highlight of the day was when Wendy Kopp spoke about how her idea for Teach for American began to take root. Her target group for workers: college seniors from elite universities. This idea came out when she was a senior at Princeton University. Her advisor thought she was crazy. These students generally graduate to six-figure salaries and she was trying to recruit them for a salary no where close to that.

Here was my first thought about her idea: genius.

You see I’m only a year and half removed from undergrad education. Most of my friends from college graduated to dead end jobs, or were working endless hours just trying to move up. Most of them have now decided to go back to school for a masters or have moved on to a more meaningful, low paying job.

If you wonder why your church doesn’t reach college graduates, I think I know why. College grads are qualified enough to be given respect, power, and leadership. Most churches don’t give any of those to people who are 22. Wendy Kopp and Teach for American is a success story because she knew that college grads don’t just want money, they want to work for meaning and signifcance.

Question for you: Would you rather do a meaningful job or a high paying job?

The Simple Things in Life

After yesterday’s political discussion I figure it is time for something a little more chill.

Rose and I love to head to our neighborhood park. No one is ever there and it is so tranquil in the midst of suburbia. It is definitely the best spot within walking distance to detach from life and just hang out with each other. Here is our spot:

(This was my first chance to put my new Macbook to work with iMovie…I love it!)

Where do you go to get away from it all?

Endorsement

A few weeks ago Brian McLaren announced his endorsement of Barack Obama on his blog. He is endorsing the candidate for the Matthew 25 network and as a private citizen.

Around that same time Brian was writing several posts with his thoughts on faith and politics. Much of what he was saying led me to believe he was apprehensive to endorse a candidate…clearly I midunderstood him.

I think Emergent or emerging people (including myself) are changing the tide of how Christians are known to vote (going from Republican to independent or Democrat). This I have no problem with. The idea that God belongs to a party is wrong and unwarranted. However, this same group has largely spoken about the need to not align with a party or a specific candidate. Brian McLaren is one of the key leaders of this group of people and I’m troubled by this endorsement. Brian said this about endorsement:

“I read a post by a good friend. He suggested we should advise everybody and endorse nobody. I’m quite certain that my friend meant, by the word endorse, ‘blindly, uncritically, and without reservation express support for.’ And, of course, with that I would fully agree.”

  • Let me say this. I have immense respect for Brian, and I completely agree with much of what he says regarding politics and Christianity. But I disagree with him on this. I think if everyone else agreed with his above statement, then endorsement could be a great thing. But, I do not think most people view it that way. Endorse should never be without reservation, yet most people view it as such. Now McLaren has aligned himself alongside Obama as close as any other Christian leader.
  • McLaren has also stated that his endorsement is his own as a private citizen. I think that If endorsement was simply for ourselves, then why endorse publicly? As a well known author, previous pastor, and Christian leader, it is true that his endorsement is his alone, but his endorsement holds a lot of clout by those who listen intently to what he has to say.

I don’t want my blog or any post to be one that is ripping a part a person. My goal isn’t to disagree with Brian, but to dialogue about how we as Christ followers should (or not) endorse candidates and vote.

So while I have said in the Seattle Times that I’m leaning towards Obama, I will not be announcing my decision on this blog or anywhere else outside of my close friends (and if I’m honest I really don’t want to choose between these 2 guys).

Your thoughts? Should we endorse or no?

Look of the Night

I’ve blogged plenty of times already about the night of worship we had last Friday night at Sunset. Elaine Heasley is the wife of one of our singers, Seth. She took some awesome pictures. Here are some of my favorites. We have had quite a bit of positive feedback. I love being at a presbyterian church where people raise their hands and love to sing out in worship. I think I’ll show people these pictures anytime someone asks me what kind of presbyterian church I go to. I’ll just say: one that worships.

Which one is your favorite?

Why is Life So Hard?

We are through 2 weeks of a 3 week series by Barbara Feil on: “Why is Life So Hard”? I’ve found the series to be poignant for many people within our congregation. She has based a lot of the series around a book named Writing on the Wall. Based around this idea we’ve had “bumpers” (one minute videos that show before the message) each week.

On Sunday July 27th the bumper we showed was me writing.

…yes I know my handwriting is horrid.

I’m new to the idea of message bumpers, but I really dig them. They provide a great transition from music or announcements to message. They set the pace for the topic and bring me into a place where I’m ready to receive God’s word.

What do you think about bumpers?

Portland Bloggers: Leadership Summit ‘08

This is my first chance to be a part of Leadership Summit, put on by Willow Creek. It is this Thursday and Friday. Almost everyone that goes either has to travel to Willow or to one of the satellite locations. The great thing is that I work at one of those locations (Portland, Oregon-Sunset Presbyterian Church). I am definitely looking forward to it. As usual, lots of great speakers. And I get a chance to be somewhat behind the scenes, in helping our satellite location be a great host.

A good blog friend of mine, Brent, is coming up. He and I talked briefly about trying to have a dinner for bloggers going to the Portland Summit to get together (not paid by us though obviously). We decided that Thursday night after the last session (scheduled to end at 5:30pm) we would head over to Oak Hills McMenamins. It is either a 10 second drive, or a 2 minute walk from the church, your choice. I know Brent and 3 of his friends are going to come, and I’ll make sure lots of my friends from church head over too. Let’s make this a great night to connect with people at the conference. Help me get the word out by blogging about it too.

Are you coming?

Worship Night

On Friday night we spent over an hour and a half singing and worshiping God as a church. It was definitely one of the best things I’ve ever been a part of at any church. God moved in silence, in music, in words, in reflection, in singing, and in prayer. Here is what the night looked like:

  • Mighty to Save (G)
  • For Who You Are (G)
  • Doxology
    • Moments of reflection and confession
  • A Broken Spirit
  • From the Inside Out (C)
  • Jesus Paid it All (B)
  • At the Cross (E)
  • The Stand (A)
    • A time of communion while Jill and Joyce underscored on piano and keys with The Stand.
  • Healer (B, we began by showing the “song story” on video)
  • Revelation Song (D)
    • We took an offering that will be given to Columbia County Flood Relief to support the ongoing flood relief in Vernonia, Oregon.
  • Hosanna (sang as a special by Rebecca Strott)
  • All Because of Jesus (A)
  • Happy Day (B)
  • Jesus Paid it All (short reprise)

It was a TON of work for our already busy volunteers. Usually just making a Sunday morning happen during a normal week is a lot of work, but so many stepped forward willing to make this all happen. We could not have done this without them.

One of my highlights was definitely going Healer and Revelation Song back to back. That was a moment for sure. Our congregation knows Jesus Paid it All and loves it. We made that the song that the night would revolve around. I think it was a perfect choice.

Bottom line: I can’t wait to do this again.

I Did A Triathlon

From the sidelines :)

I’m sure if I trained I could probably do a duathlon (I’m not a big swimmer). But today I cheered on my sisters who did a sprint triathlon at Blue Lake in East Portland. They finished 12th and 24th out of all the women, and 2nd in their respective age groups. Yes…that is impressive.

When we were pulling in to watch them my dad said, “I bet this sort of thing will make us want to do it.”

I said, “I bet this sort of thing will make me thankful I didn’t pay money to get my butt kicked.”
