Blazin’

Wow today was HOT, or is still hot actually. It said 101 in my car and 96 on my weather bug widget. The sad part is that no pools are open.

How are you beating the heat?

If You Were Wondering

In Oregon it doesn’t take much for school to be late or closed. Some of my siblings and mom are busy celebrating a day off in Salem and up in my neck of the woods, school is either 2 hours late or closed. The funny thing is….that picture is how much snow we got. Basically everyone outside of Oregon thinks this is a joke, but it is not. It doesn’t take much here. Pretty funny eh?

Fortuitous Bouncing

The talk of the week around here is about how cold it has been. Sure temperatures in the 20s and 30s is cold for here, but comparatively it is nothing. The Packers/Giants game was played in a wind chill in the -20s. My grandparents in Minnesota said they barely got above zero everyday for the past week. So to all Oregonians: it ain’t cold.

  2. I’ve been a big Myspace hater for a while. I have an account that I hardly ever use and I have been looking for a reason to delete it and then I read this. I am pretty sure I might go along with this…should I?
  3. Barack did a Q/A session with Christianity Today and they did ask the tough questions.
  4. The Dem debate this week was so much better than last week.
  5. Donald Miller had a cool article featured on CNN.com.
  6. The same church that likes to protest Iraq war veteran funerals is planning to protest Heath Ledger’s funeral. Anyone else want to show up and punch some people in the face?
  7. The new Passion cd is coming out soon. SWEET!
  8. Some good thoughts on how often to introduce new music in church.
  9. A good blog on what Huckabee would need to do to win nomination.
  10. This was the American Idol highlight of the week for me. Hands down. “I’m going to be the next World Idol.” Haha.

The Anniversary Trip

Thanks to both my parents and Rose’s parents, Rose and I were able to go on a two day adventure up to the mountains for our anniversary. I spent hours looking for the perfect place to stay that would also allow us to get up into the snow. I found an awesome BnB in Parkdale and thought we could just go tubing after our night stay there.

Parkdale is about 20 minutes south of Hood River, towards Mt. Hood. At about 2100 feet, Mary (our host) said they have snow almost throughout all of December through spring break. Old Parkdale Inn was a great place. We went on a walk in the snow, walked to dinner across the street, and watched 2 movies. We had made plans to go to Skibowl and go tubing on their “upper and extreme hills.” Snowboarding was too expensive since we didn’t have any gear and tubing is always fun. About 20 minutes from Government Camp we hit the “chains required” sign and pulled off to put them on. I had borrowed some from my dad. Well dumb me thought they would work just fine…my dad did too. But……….they didn’t. They were too small. I even took two links off and they were still too small. On to plan B. I knew that Cooper Spur wasn’t too far from where we were chaining up. So we turned around and went up there. I knew they had tubing there, but little did I know how lame it would be. Sure if you have five year olds that you want to take skiiing or tubing, Cooper Spur is a great place. But for Rose and I it was a waste of $20 to go on probably 10 tube runs on their “extreme” hill that was basically a joke. At least it was snowing the whole time.
From there we trekked back down to Hood River and got coffee and candy for the ride home. As you can see I was dressed for the occasion and quite happy about our awesome tubing time.

We came home and went to Red Lobster for dinner. Thanks to my Minnesota grandparents for that one :).

And then we shared in one of the weirdest traditions I had never heard of until I got married. Eating one year old cake. It had been frozen for a year and thawing in the fridge for a week….and it actually tasted pretty good. Good job April.
All in all, a great weekend. First time away from home we had, outside of holidays, since August. Rose really needed the RnR at the BnB and of course the snow was AMAZING.

How was your weekend?

5 Reasons I Love Snow

Those of you who know me, know that I love snow. I live at 200 feet above sea level in Oregon and snow isn’t really abundant in these parts. I always get at least somewhat excited about the possibility of snow in the forecast, only to be disappointed almost every time. So I thought about why it is that snow is so wonderful to me.

1. Snow brings different colors to life. Most of the time things are either yellow or green. Snow covers all that to make things white.

2. Snow changes the pace of life. We all have routines to our daily life. We work from 8 to 5 or we always do grocery shopping on Tuesday night, snow changes all that. We can’t drive as fast, we want to get outside to enjoy it, or we have to shovel the drive way (of course this never happens in Oregon).

3. Sledding. Who doesn’t love sledding?

4. A day off. Anytime it snows in Oregon, school is canceled. This, in turn, means a lot of businesses are closed. Nothing is better than an unexpected day off.

5. It is peaceful. Snow doesn’t make much noise. It rains a lot here and the pitter patter gets old after 5 months of it.

Fortuitous Bouncing

It has been an interesting Christmas “break” for me. Hasn’t felt like much of a break with work and stuff going on at church.

Rose and I are about to sign a new lease on our apartment. With all the rain and cold we’ve been having some mold problems with some of our windows that never see the sun.
Any advice?

I was getting used to being out of a seminary classes and having no homework until I read this. It brought me right back to all the confusing stuff I read.

John Newton is one of my favorite song writers. Yeah, he has been dead for a while, but he is still as good as it gets. His life story is one that shows God’s grace in profound ways.

My mum in law is FAMOUS!!!

Check this television show review site. Scroll down to their review of “In God’s Name”, the show I talked about a few days ago.

One guy’s list of the 10 ten blogs of 2007.

A snow update for those who don’t live in Beaverton…the national weather service issued a heavy snow warning for all of Portland metro for today…I saw probably 20 flakes ALL DAY! Someone needs to be fired.

Wrong Again?

The most overrated forecast EVER. How can you call for 3 inches of snow…while I got NOTHING!!!!

Short Christmas

It is a short Christmas for Rose and I. We both have to work on the 26th and today. So we get a one day break. Better than nothing.
The big news around here is the small possibility of afternoon snow tomorrow. I talked about this about a month ago. Forecasters always call for snow that never happens. I doubt this will be an exception.
Hope you have a wonderful Christmas. This year I am amazed at the authentic way that God choose to show himself known through the incarnate baby Jesus. It is through this baby that we have life abundant. Here are some other good thoughts on Christmas.

What is God showing you this Christmas?

Fortuitous Bouncing

1. I wonder if it will actually snow here (Portland, OR). After living here for over 13 years now I’ve watched the news hundreds of times when snow has been predicted or expected and it is usually a let down or doesn’t even happen. It seems more legit than usual but I’ve been betrayed enough in my time here so I’m sure I’ll open the window in the morning only to be disappointed.

2. Carlos at Ragamuffin Soul had quite an interesting post I was checking out earlier this week. A 24 hour show about everything that is Apple. No I haven’t gotten my Mac yet, but it doesn’t mean I can’t start preparing.

3. Is it ok to say that I don’t care how bad Nebraska was this year? They are going to hire the guy I wanted 4 years ago. He should have never been able to leave for LSU but I’ll take him now too.

4. Check out this awesome post on working out with a Wii. Yeah….you read that right.

5. Jeremy at Milestone Worship has a great post on Christmas music. He actually made me think that I could half way enjoy playing Christmas music.

6. Scot McKnight has a great review on the book unChristian. Some of the statistics on there should scare anyone that wants to reach the world for Jesus.

7. Craig at Lifechurch.tv has a blog that was one of the main reasons I started blogging.

8. Dan Kimball is probably the first person that inspired me with a vision when I decided to go into ministry. Here is a great post on the importance of everyone being a theologian.

Have a great weekend. A cold weekend across most of the US. I think I read that 30 out of 50 states are expecting snow in the next 5 days.

Perfect Weather

Being from Oregon I’ve always thought about how great it would be to live somewhere else. My sister went to college in LA and my other sister is going to SoCal too. I understand how great sunny days are, and I can appreciate them considering between now and April I’ll experience only a hand-full of them. However, in Cali you have to deal with the unbearably hot summers. In Oregon you don’t even need air conditioning but 3 or 4 days a summer. So I just wonder if living somewhere that is sunny all the time (San Diego), humid all the time (Caribbeean), warm all the time (Hawaii), is really better than somewhere like the midwest, northwest, or northeast. They all have very distinct seasons, mild summers (not the midwest), and the northwest cities such as Portland and Seattle see snow once or twice a year so it rarely gets below freezing.

What is perfect weather?
