Where to Begin?

2008 August 31

School began Friday. I honestly think the first day is the worst day. The reality of how much has to be done in the coming months is truly overwhelming. I’m sitting in our guest room/office surrounded by books, syllabuses, and boxes full of clothes (because this room is a mess) and I can honestly say overwhelmed would sum up how I feel right now. Would you pray for me? It isn’t something I ask for often, but I sense that I need it right now.

Here is a basic list of everything that I have to get done between right now and December 12th:

  1. Read Ephesians 3 times a week for 15 weeks.
  2. Write a commentary on Ephesians 3:1-13.
  3. Read 4 scholarly books each over 250 pages.
  4. Read Acts through Philemon at least once.
  5. Read over 250 pages of professor notes.
  6. Write a 20 page research paper on Romans.
  7. Take 2 personal retreats for my Spiritual Formation course.
  8. Write 6 papers, each around 3 pages in length for spiritual formation.
  9. Complete 13 weekly assignments for my Bible Study Methods course.
  10. Oh and that is not including the tests I have…

Here we go…

Dude, I am stressing out reading your list.

You’ll do awesome. I’ll be praying.

Tyler, I will be praying for you. You’ve outlined all of the reasons I know now is not the time for me to return to school – maybe later it will work out. For now I’m participating in The Transforming Center Leader Retreat Community and Integrity Worship Institue. And I am learning, which I thank God for.

I am extremely excited – for you – about your spiritual formation course and hope you’ll share more about that course with us. I will be praying that you will encounter God as you do your coursework, the retreats and all, and that it will not simply feel like work to you. My retreat group that I am a part of is for the purpose of spiritual formation and we learn about spiritual disciplines each month. It’s been life changing and ministry saving for me. I will pray that as you read and write and retreat you will encounter our Great God in a very personal way. Blessings to you as you seek to learn and grow.

I’ll definitely pray for you. From what I’ve read on here & seen through your work at Sunset I believe you are a very strong person with a strong will. I know your wife will be supporting you as will other family & friends as well. I agree it must be very overwhelming at the moment, but I hope it gets less so as it goes! Good luck. Our thoughts are with you.
