I read the link to Tony Campolo’s article. While it is encouraging to see that he is finally tryihg to exert some sort of influence in the Democratic party regarding abortion … it seems like an awfully small step after many, years of close to a million abortions per year. What has taken him so long? The reality is the pro-life movement is about much more than just being against abortion. There are so many non-profits that are giving themselves to caring for the mother not just casting them aside … providing maternity homes like the one I happen to be on the board of … supporting abstinence programs … pregnancy resource centers that ensure that every woman that is willing to have her baby has the support she needs. I simply do not buy the 60% are based on economic reasons. I’ve sat in those counseling rooms and listened to their reasons …. claiming economic reasons may help them sleep with their decision, but many of them simply want what they believe is an easy way out of a difficult decision and they have been so heavily influenced by our society. If Tony Campolo and Jim Wallis want to affect the abortion issue, Roe v. Wade doesn’t even have to be overturned at this point … just go after the public funding for Planned Parenthood. During the 2006-2007 fiscal year, Planned Parenthood received a total of $336.7 million from government grants and contracts. In 2008, $300 million was given to family planning clinics, under the Title X program. These funds were used to service over five million people, a third of which received “care” from a Planned Parenthood clinic. This new Planned Parenthood Web site has again raised the necessity to put an end to the federal government’s funding of Planned Parenthood.”

If my maternity home had even a tiny fraction of the money that is given to Planned Parenthood, we could have maternity homes all over Portland … with assistance for adoption and parenting.

I’m glad that the Christian left is beginning to talk about abortion … but we’ve been doing the things that they are proposing …. without the intrusion of the federal government and in the name of Jesus for years.
