Saving Money

If you are anything like me, you are just scraping by every month. Paying bills and paying for school pretty much straps us for every dime we earn each month.

So I’m doing my part to help us save a little. I’m not talking about energy efficient lightbulbs, saving pop cans, or making homemade mochas instead of going to Starbucks, though I do all those things. I’m talking about not cutting my hair.

long hair

As you might remember, I got my hair cut back in January (the first time in over 6 months), and I should probably do the same again soon because it has been 3.5 months now since my last cut. I’m curious…

What weird thing are you doing to save money?

This was going to be the year of getting cable TV and a DVR. Nope.

We also cut out bringing Michael home for Spring Break & won’t be doing a family summer vacation.

John isn’t traveling to wholesale shows to promote his artwork.

No barkdust. No tucked-in annual “color spots” for the yard.

We’re spending way more time on the net…it’s a lot cheaper than going out for drives like we used to do a lot.

I also changed the hair wax I use (since you mentioned hair)…it’s 10% of the cost, but probably 60% as good…so it’s worth it.

Stay single..so don’t have to always pay for two whenever I go out to eat.

We started listening to Dave Ramsey and going on a cash budget. Makes a huge difference!

I’m going back to work part-time vs. full-time next year to save on daycare. We’re being diligent in paying close attention to our every day expenses and making cuts and Chad tried to buy a scooter yesterday to cut down on gas… but that’s where I drew the line :o )
Oh and we are also sacrificing the pricey toilet paper (gasp) and potty training Emma at 8 months so we don’t have to sell our home to buy diapers. Haha.

Love the diapers idea. I’ll keep that one in the memory bank. Yay for potty training.

We would do that, but we love the airline miles we get to see Rose’s parents.

Loved the hair wax comment. Way to keep the theme going.

We are eating Hot dogs once a week.

    not drinking cokes.
using Netflix instead of local rental companies.
purchasing meat in bulk, flash frozen.
going to the park instead of Chuck’E'Cheese.

    yes!

Here goes attempt #2 at my comment.

    1. Turn off all lights when I leave a room. No lights used during the day time.
    2. Making the girls Summer dresses out of my hubs’ old dress shirts instead of buying them.
    3. Menu plan.
    4. Wash all laundry in cold water.
    5. Baking our own bread. My girls’ school has a “no nut” policy. Most healthy breads are processed in the same plant as nuts. I can break a super healthy, no nut loaf for $1 vs $3.

I spend so much of my time saving my family money that I don’t have time to go out & spend any money either. Yikes. My life is dull.

I pulled the kids out of private school & started home-schooling again, but their going back next year even if we have to sell the house!
    Cut my kids hair.
Really cut back on grocery shopping, I don’t make a lot of trips to Costco. We eat rice & beans & beans & rice. We grow our own lettuce & eat lots of salad.

I blogged about it here: http://jenniclayville.com/?p=2355

Did you need me to cut your hair for free??? Cuz I can do that for you, freak.

  • http://www.shapingthespace.net David

Just don’t let Jenni’s sister Renae near you Tyler…I’ve seen her hair cutting……..

  • http://ash-nits.blogspot.com ash

touching. but i’ll bet you’d never guess that most girls aren’t that traditional anymore. wink.

You can easily work this out…let someone like Jenni or myself cut it for free!

I still think you dye your hair BTW…along with alot of other peps :) Not dying would save alot of dough.

  • http://manofdepravity.com Tyler

I’ve never dyed my hair in my life.

You do know that I have a pair of clippers here at my house. I also have a pair of scissors. We could do something about that hair if you need to. Buzz. Buzz.

Oh yeah, and I quit buying comic books and swapped over to buying trade paperbacks. We buy and sell books, DVDs and video games. And we watch as much pirated video as we can on the computer so we don’t have to pay any money to rent movies. I know, shame on me, but it’s free…isn’t it?

you pull off a shaggy hair do man.
ITo save $ I buy corn tortillas. Im slowly learning to like them mainly because they are cheap, a ton come in a bag and they last a really long time in the freezer. I try to make everything I can with them, chips, tacos, I think I can make a good cereal with them too but thats still in a testing.

    Oh.

I’ve been collecting all of the littered coke bottles and keeping their caps to enter into mycokerewards.com .. and that is how I get yearly magazine subscriptions for free, thank you very much :)
