More Than Meets the Eye

Yesterday I spent the entire day at my church. Between two morning services, a band/vocal practice for high school camp, and our high school group meeting…I had a full day.

Spend an entire day at a church and you get to see a lot of interesting things:

  • Some people stare at you blankly for 20 minutes in a row.
  • While others raise their hands and sing the entire time.
  • And still others sit staring at the floor crying.

It would be easy to judge who is less spiritual in this group, but I bet the Holy Spirit works in deeper ways than we can come to know or understand.

I, far too often, judge the “success” of a worship set on external reactions, yet I also know that much of what the Holy Spirit is doing is more than meets the eye.

I imagine that some worship leaders need that reminder today.

My husband is one of those that is not externally responsive. In fact, what he would do if not for peer pressure would be…sit…listen…watch. That would be his best possible worship…and he really loves to worship through music.

I was going to come down here and say, “Touche,” but now I’m thinking that’s not as spiritual as Dennis’s Amen. :>)

I thought this was a post on Transformers, but I was wrong…kind of like what you’re talking about with worship. I’ve been there more than a time or two. Good post.

Some people really aim at seeing physical response from other people. What they have in mind is they should act to a certain standards personally set by them. That’s just totally wrong.Different strokes, different folks. Not because a specific individual doesn’t do this in my terms doesn’t mean that he’s not doing the right thing at all.

Well said. We were discussing this very topic this past Monday evening.

Hey, my question to you Tyler (or some other worship leader eavesdropping lol), how does the audience response affect you during worship? I’ll admit, sometimes I over-participate in worship to kinda encourage the worship team/band. Does that really do anything?

Definitely it makes a difference. If anything it reinforces the community and relationship I have with that person because we’re both diving into worshiping together. And it does encourage me as well. That could just be artificial if the sole motivation is someone looking more engaged than they really are, but I hope that isn’t true.
