A Life Turned Around

As I posted about last week, I hung out with Arnie for an afternoon. Arnie isn’t totally sure that he believes in Jesus. He said his heart wants to, but his head still has questions. Questions that no person can just give answers to, he told me.

The world likes Arnie because he is a “success story.” He was a meth addict and seller, who was homeless and jobless. Now he has lives in an apartment, doesn’t use or sell drugs, and rides his bike 20 miles (each way) to get to church.

I like Arnie because he is honest. I like Arnie because the small blessing of being in a video shown at church was the “highlight of his life”. His exact words to me after the services last Sunday. Arnie put things in perspective for me.

This video is Arnie’s story. It was shown on Sunday at Sunset (video embedded rss readers).

i love this story. i’ve started a little thing i’m working on called “project homeless” or something… collaborating stories -i have been constantly amazed over the past several years with the homeless i have met. they are lost, and they often don’t realize that they are important. and weather it’s a lifestyle they’ve chosen, or a series of bad choices or just sheer bad luck, they all have a story- who are we not listen, who are we not to be welcoming? i think that it’s great that arnie found a place where he was welcomed and could get his life on track.

As I have said before, I know Arnie but what stood out in his story and that you kind of allude to in saying that he isn’t totally sure he believes in Jesus is his realization that when he hit bottom, he realized that he was totally alone—except he wasn’t alone. Jesus was right there all along and I believe that Jesus is still right there with Arnie, that Arnie is learning to trust. I loved what he said about Jesus–the kind of person he was. That is what we want the Cup of Joy dinners to be—where people can come and be accepted regardless, to be Jesus to people like Arnie.
