Announcement

Well here is an announcement I don’t think I have anticpated making.

I am buying a Mac.

After a life of using PC’s, I am switching. I have used a Mac probably less than 15 times in my life. Somehow our paths just never crossed very often. Nonetheless I cannot resist the urge to have iLife.

My plan is to use the student discount to buy the higher end white Macbook. It is basically the same as the trendy black one, with less hard drive space.

I need your help. I know a lot of you who read this are Mac users. As a student who needs to write and read papers, as a musician, as someone who is firmly entrenched in PC world…I need your help. No advice is unwarranted. I am as green as it gets with what to know about switching from PC to Mac.

So let’s hear it!

I’m sure you are probably thinking…”how can he afford to get one…I thought he was a poor seminary student.” I am a poor seminary student, but I’m selling our current computer to my sister before she goes to college. Hence why I am almost able to afford one.

Mr Rupprecht will be able to counsel you on this…(although he might be a bit biased, being a hardcore Mac user).

What I’ve heard- Mac got better graphics and better multimedia application. IF I ever got me a Mac, might be just purely for studio recording/multimedia application.

I’ll take advice from all kinds of Mac users. Makes no difference to me.

That is the computer I have. The higher end white one. I LOVE it. If you can afford it, upgarde to 4GB or ram. Resist the urge to purchase .mac — it is not worth it. Have fun with photobooth, and post the pictures so everyone can laugh at you. I like MS Office for mac and I use entourage for my email. If you can, get Adobe Creative Suite (ministry expense…right?). You will have LOTS of fun with that.

Here is what I suggest you do — since I was a PC user until just a few years ago. Go to lynda.com/deke for a free week trial of video tutorials, and take the tutorial on MAC OSX Leopard. It will be a big help and will increase your learning curve drastically.

Then, if you like lynda.com, sign up for only $25/mo and learn Adobe Creative Suite…

All I have to say is, AMAZING!! I love Mac more than, well… I can’t think of anything funny to say. And hey, if you need anything windows, put windows on your mac. I run windows through a program called Parallels and it works amazing. I can have both windows and OS X running at the same time if I want to. I think you will be so happy with a Mac!

Don’t go to the Dark [er white] Side…

take the plunge, it’s probably worth it. I mean its worth it. All i can say is that the hardest thing for most people that use a make is keeping their files organized.

I’m still not sure I’ve met a person who really tries to keep themselves organized. I’m an anal freak of nature when it comes to file organization, and I cant stand having things on my desktop.

good luck and feel free to ask if your ever in need. been with mac for 10yrs. (but im still not a genius)

I just switched to a Mac THIS WEEK and I love it. I got the MacBook Air because I wanted something really light and portable and I don’t need it for the media stuff like a lot of Mac users do. I had not worked on Macs much before this purchase but I am learning quickly. So far, so good for me!

  8. Mr R.... says:

So, I guess I am a bit biased.. but having to support thousands of desktop devices, It seems that I get 4 times more support calls from PC (windows) users than from Mac. As far as as a Windows emulator, I would suggest VMware over parallels. I have used them both and the emulation drivers seem to be more stable with VMware. Extra ram will allow to to have more applications open at the same time. I also think that there are some add on software (free) to help Window users adapt to the Mac screen format. If you have specfic questions, catch up with me this Sunday.. 8^)

    Mr R…
( boy does that make me sound old )

  9. Tyler says:

Jenni…that was encouraging! Thanks. Makes me a little less worried about it.

Bruce (Mr R)…glad to see you make your debut on my blog. I will definitely be talking to you more on Sunday.

  10. Boy am I watching this closely because Michael (for college) is switching to a MAC as we speak and I am not only green in this area, I am chartreusse and barely budding! He does a lot of film editing and recording and this just makes logical sense. I am just intimidated about how to do the transfer of all that is stored on his desktop PC.

  11. Michelle says:

I’ve been a mac user for years =). If you have any questions just let me know. Don’t tell Adam you are making the switch… I don’t know how he’ll handle it =)

  12. You realize that you are one step closer to Twitter now.

And your a ton sexier :)

  13. Tyler says:

i totally agree with the sexy part….but i’m stayin strong with twitter. i won’t support a monopoly :)

  14. I hate monopoly, but then I am not much of a board game guy…

  15. Tyler,
This brings up deeper, bigger issues. You’ll have to change your blog now to “Tyler, Man Of Less-Depravity”.

Welcome to MacWorld. I know very few people anywhere who regret the switch. I’m a Mac-Evangelist, no doubt.

Oh yeah … and I always have to do this … pardon the plug, but as you may know, I have an online biz, and of of the big sellers are Speck MacBook Cases … these hard, clear, seethru cases that snap on the macbook to protect it from scratches, spills, elements, etc. If you are interested, check’em out at GetSkinsNow.Com. You can use coupon code “BLOG” (without the quotes) for an additional 10% discount.

OK I just needed to rephrase what I had said earlier:

Instead of “although he might be a bit biased, being a hardcore Mac user”

What I was trying to say: “Mr.Rupp maybe more partial to Mac, since he’s already a Mac owner and have dealt with Macs quite extentively :)

First sentence was typed in a humorous manner too although I forgot to include the smiley.

English language is so darn hard!!! :)

  17. Yonas says:

OK i have to rephrase again…I meant to say

“Mr.Rupp is THE EXPERT on this topic, since he’s already a Mac owner and have dealt with Macs quite extentively”

There. I can let this one go now :)

Tyler – Bringin’ sexy Mac! (Hey, they can’t all be gems)

I’ve been a Mac user since 1986, starting on the Plus. http://lowendmac.com/compact/macintosh-plus.html Welcome to the fold. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised at what a NON-issue the switch will be. I got my Mom to buy an iMac 7 years ago, and she’s called me 2 times in those 7 years for computer help – and she’s in her 60s!

Definitely get as much RAM as you can right off the bat. If you’re the DIY-type and don’t want to pay Apple’s prices, get correct-spec sticks from newegg.com. I put some non-Apple RAM in my MacBook (gasp!) and haven’t had any regrets. Consider the AppleCare protection plan – a bit expensive but worth it if something should happen. You might still be able to get Office 2004 with your student discount. If I think of more I’ll tell you tomorrow.

    Rhett

PS – I’m listening to our Thursday rehearsal on iTunes as I type this.

  19. Darin says:

I have one of each but my Mac is an antique so I couldn’t tell you anything about a new system. I still live in the 9’s.

I switched to using PC because of my job. I am on my third computer in four years because of death while my old school mac keeps plugging away.
