A Day in the Life…

…of a seminary student.

On Fridays I head to the eastside of Portland for a day full of classes. I’m in class from 8am to 9:50, 10 to 11:50, and 1pm to 4:50pm. Usually by about 3…I’m toast. The good thing is last my last prof of the day is very kind to us all day students. He gets it.

Last week I filmed what a day is like for me, from the very beginning to the very end. 2 separate videos because my video files got all messed up. The 2nd one doesn’t have audio so you can watch them both at the same time if you want.

(Videos embedded RSS readers)

On my way to class I listen to the most recent message by Mark Driscoll at Mars Hill. It gets my Biblical and theological juices going.

On my way home I listen to the most recent message by Francis Chan at Cornerstone Simi Valley. He keeps me from falling asleep because he has passion in his speaking.

Do you recommend any other podcasts over these?

Tyler, you’re too cool for school. By the way, I like the hair. I’m in Keizer Dec 25-31, we should use your coupons to get burritos again.

Steve Gregg, http://www.thenarrowpath.com. Over 900 to choose from. Topical or Verse by Verse. No registration, no charge, no strings. Not so much podcasts (although he has a Radio Show archive) as just FREE BIBLE TEACHING MP3s!!!

cool videos, nice to see your friday routine.
and, a word on syntactical analysis…well, uh,
    how about classroom analysis,
you need some color in there, with all those blank white walls!
no doubt the teaching and discussion is more dynamic, to keep you awake. :0)

some of the podcasts i enjoy:

    ~desiring God (john piper)
    ~wild @ heart (john elderedge)
    ~mars hill
~beaverton foursquare (randy remington & crew)
    ~the passion podcast

I shouldn’t say that I only listen to those 2 podcasts…but I only have time for 2 on my traveling and usually find it hard to find more time during the week to listen to more. I do check out Lifechurch.tv’s worship podcast and listen to Rob Bell at the other Mars Hill now and then as well.

    Keep em coming.

  6. your head looks like its about to fall off in the fast video. but, i’m glad it didn’t.
podcasts…since i can’t stand driscoll, i’m sure that any podcast is better than that one. this one has nothing to do with religion (most of the times), but it’s an amazing podcast…super creative and usually very thought provoking… This American Life. i love it.

Tyler, I feel your pain with Inductive Bible Study. I too having to use Inductive bible study to go through the Old Testament. And let me state clearly, I am not a fan of inductive bible study. Although, I am also taking Greek this year, which helps with the whole grammar thing. Boooo. Later.

  8. I think you eating food was the highlight, but that’s just me :)

Aaron- Come on…Mark isn’t that bad. I don’t listen to him for his man centered theology…I listen to him because he is an incredibly gifted speaker and because he knows the Bible, theology, and culture very very well.

Kyle- I agree….this week I have to do a “horizontal chart”…other wise known as a seminary student’s aim at an artistic outline.

    Brent- I’m a growing boy…gotta keep fed.

    Tyler,

Good stuff. I probably wouldn’t have been picking my nose (in brown plaid shirt) in that second video if I knew the Candid Camera was on! :-)

Not sure I can improve on your podcasts.
Listen to Driscoll often, but mainly John Piper, Matt Chandler of The Village Church, the teaching team at The Journey Church St. Louis (Darrin Patrick and Jonathan McIntosh), and a lesser-known preacher named Damian Kyle (Calvary Chapel Modesto), who is about the same age group as Piper and is able to expose the human heart as he faithfully brings the Word.

My primary teacher is my wonderful wife, Kari. I’d listen to her and read her words above all others’.

  12. Janet Fraser says:
