GFU Students Suspended Over Cardboard Obama Hanging

On Wednesday it was announced that the students who hung the cardboard Obama last week have been caught. As this story has continued to be a headliner, George Fox University’s reputation continues to go down. As a proud alumnus I am saddened by this. Even more, I’m saddened that this event gets depicted as how Christians view politics and race. You can read my thoughts on Fox and this issue HERE.

The 4 students were given a long-term suspension and a large amount of community service, including some classes on civic obedience. The school will not announce the amount of community service, the length of the suspensions or who the students are because of federal law.

You can read the news story HERE and HERE.

What do you think of the punishment? Too severe/not enough?

tyler, i honestly think that GFU may take a short term hit but in the long run, its reputation and substance will grow.

I think punishment and civic obedience classes or cultural sensitivity courses can’t really change people’s real thoughts, only actions and how they talk in public, not behind close doors.

Maybe it’s my own paranoia, but it seems that when I chimed in on these topics, suddenly the comments dried up.

I think the bigger point here is that Fox is backing up their claims that Jesus is redemptive. They are giving these students an opportunity through various means to have a change of mindset. I don’t think any of them meant harm, nor did they expect this to become international news.

So while I am sad GFU has been ripped on by some, I think their response shows that they can grow in the long run just like you said Eugene.
