The Ideal Dinner

This is another post in a series I’m doing of questions that some of you asked. If you would like to add your question, go here and do so.
Today’s question is from David Goodwin. David is from Australia and is active on Twitter and on his blog. Definitely check out some of his stuff. He asked:
Who would be your ideal dinner guest? (only choose living people)
As with any dinner, I would hope Rose would be a part of it. Sadly we work opposite schedules so often that we rarely have dinner together sitting down at the dinner table. That happens about once every couple weeks (no joke).
Let’s say a typical dinner consists of 4 people. So I’ll name my other 2 ideal dinner guests since Rose will be there.
- Tiger Woods: And yes I probably would have included him on this list before everything went down Thanksgiving weekend. And yes it is kind of an obvious and bland answer, but I think a Christian needs to reach out to him with the hope of Jesus. Yeah I know, a bland reason…but honestly, I agree with Mr. Hume that Christianity is the answer, though I’d like to talk to him about Jesus not about turning to “the Christian faith.” Plus it would be fun to talk about golf with Tiger for an hour.
- Chris Tomlin: I’ve met him before and he’s definitely the reason I’m a worship leader today. I fell in love with his music my junior year of high school before anyone knew who he was. I learned how to play guitar with his songs, and it would be incredible to pick his brain for an hour about song writing, theology, leading worship, and music. Plus he could help me with the tough conversation that I’ll be having with Tiger.

Tyler Braun.
My family’s bigger than four so I’ll add the guests I’d like to have. 1. Rev. Dr. Billy Graham. 2. Rev. Denn Denning 3. Rev. Ron McHattie 4. ???
I was going to be cliche and say Pres. Obama but I don’t know who the fourth would be. The others are those who have had significant impact on my life, from praying me into the Kingdom to mentoring during some of my best and worse times. The fourth I’d like to have there, who is with our Lord, is Ross McKay. A 9th grade Sunday School teacher who bit the bullet and took a class of would be assassins, hooligans and typical guys of which I was one.
Peace,
Alan
I always knew you had some assassin in you Alan.
#1 on my list would be Bono. Perhaps we’d talk about sports or something…
#2 Shane Barnard (from Shane & Shane) for the same reasons as your Tomlin pick.
I’ve always wanted to play a round with Tiger and just talk to him about things other than golf…even more so now that all this happened. Plus, the golf tips would be nice.
Hmmm… I will go with
1) Nelson Mandela – just to talk with him for an hour or two would be amazing.
2) Thomas Sowell – I have a mad crush on an 80-something economist. Go figure. But really, my life would be complete if I get to meet that man before I die.
3) President Al-Bashir of Sudan – I need to know what is going through that man’s head
4) And I would round it our with my dear friend Parker Fitzgerald, simply because he would think it was interesting.
If I could pick anyone in history? Sowell, Lewis, Kierkegaard and Shakespeare.
After watching Invictus, Mandela would be pretty amazing to meet. Totally agree.
First one that popped into my head is David Crowder. I’ve met him, and is so quirky and funny and humble that I think he would make a fantastic dinner guest.
Second one is harder, but I might choose Alton Brown. Besides telling us the history and chemistry of everything on the menu, I think it would totally entertaining to share a meal with him.
Tiger Woods! Hahaaahaa Tell him what you SCORED in the game you played the other day…
Doesn’t mean dinner with him wouldn’t be amazing.
Brian McKnight, and I would try to talk him into donating me his vocal chords when he dies and hopefully by then vocal chord transplants will be a reality.
Shaq, cuz I think he is hilarious and I really do want to see how small everything in my house looks with him around.
Maybe Lance Armstrong and ask him how he kept his drive and passion.
#1: Both of my grandfathers. I never knew them. I know my grandmothers and my parents and just from what I’ve heard, they were awesome men. Would love to see ‘em.
#2: Andy Stanley. This may be a cheat in terms of an answer, but ever since the wife and I’ve been going to North Point, I’ve been a big fan of his approach. Listen to all his podcasts and have read several of his books.
#3: The Beatles (can they count as one?). They aren’t my favorite band, but their legacy in music is undeniable. I’ve been listening to their catalog in chronological order and have just been fascinated by so much of their work.
#4: The wife would be present for this dinner, too =).
I will give the typical Bono answer.
But I would love to eat with David Crowder.
I should answer this too huh…
Diane being there is a given, so that’s one spot at the table taken.
Going with the total of 4 that’s become the standard here, my other two would be:
Martin Gore (Depeche Mode) – anyone who’s listened to my music would likely recognise he’s a bit of a hero of mine, and his Catholic guilt theology would make for some interesting discussion
Christine Caine – runs the A21 campaign combatting human trafficking. A very normal, humble person that God has used in extraordinary ways. There’s any number of people who I could choose who fit that remit (including lots I’ve “met” online), but Christine is currently top of my fantasy dinner list.
You two!
