Timeless And Today

I’ve never been a huge fan of hymns. Don’t get angry, I’m just being honest. The reason is two-fold:

  1. I didn’t grow up on hymns. The churches my dad worked at did about a hymn a month as I remember. And if a hymn was played it was the obvious How Great Thou Art or Great is Thy Faithfulness.
  2. I’ve rarely heard hymns arranged in a way that makes sense to me. I get that some people might completely dig an organ leading out a congregational hymn, but I’m not one of them. Some people might think this isn’t fair of me to say, those same people also don’t give my style of musical worship the time of day.

Now and then you come across something you shouldn’t like but you do. You sit in that moment of realizing you do like it and determine whether you will admit it or not.

Last night I came across Page CXVI, a band “making hymns accessible and known again. They are some of the richest, most meaningful, and moving pieces of music ever written.” They also perform under the band name The Autumn Film.

This week their 2nd “Hymns” album comes out and to celebrate, they are releasing their first “Hymns” album for free until May 4th (yes, that is tomorrow). The release comes with seven songs and charts to all of the songs.

If I can get into the arrangements of these hymns, almost anyone can. Yes I am admitting that I enjoyed hymns.

Here is my favorite song off their first album (and no it isn’t exactly a hymn, but you’ll recognize the song):
