Why I Quit Idol

I’ve watched American Idol consistently since it began way back when I was in high school. And when I say consistently, I mean I didn’t miss an episode for about 5 years (thank God for DVR).

But a few weeks ago I decided to stop watching Idol. It had been a long time coming because I had been talking about stopping each of the last 3 seasons, only to find an artist I couldn’t help but watch (think Danny Gokey).

Since then I’ve been thinking about why Idol worked so well for so long, but just doesn’t have “it” anymore. Here is what I’ve come up with:

  1. Deciphering between talent takes a lot more than 2 to 3 minutes. About 2 minutes is the length of each song on Idol. They do this for 2 reasons: One, they have time constraints to meet. Two, most of the people on the show aren’t talented enough to hold an ADD audience for longer than a minute.
  2. Character development is extremely limited. Other than how well he or she sings, how much do you really know about the person you absolutely love on the show? Not much. Idol has done a horrible job of providing the reality behind their reality show.
  3. The whole thing is a little cheesy. I kind of looked beyond this fact because I enjoyed the competition element of the show, but the cheesy group songs, drawn out elimination process, and Ryan Seacrest…let’s just say it all got old.
  4. It is more of a popularity contest than a talent show. Think I’m wrong? Guess again. I have proof. Yes, proof. What is it you ask? Tim Urban is still on the show this season. I’m fairly sure I could teach that kid a thing or two.
  5. Too performance oriented and lacking authenticity. This kind of goes back to point #2. I’m all for hearing multiple genres from an artist, but asking an acoustic singer-songwriter to do a 2 minute version of a Stones song is ridiculous. You can see it in all their faces. They have no idea how to turn a world-beater song into “their own” in 2 minutes in a genre outside their comfort zone.
  6. They have done a horrible job of using the internet to their advantage. Their website is horrible. Loads of info, no free songs, no songs on video. Just this season they decided it would be wise for all of the top 12 to have Twitter accounts. That lasted one week until they were combined into one Idol account. You could summarize all their tweets with this: “Thanks to all my fans, please vote tonight. You guys are awesome!” Pretty pointless right? I thought so too. A perfect opportunity to get to know the contestants outside of the competition, but clearly Idol told them they couldn’t talk about anything but the show and voting.

Well enough with the Idol bashing. I’m over it, and I’m fairly sure the show will die out after Simon Cowell leaves. He made it work in the first place.

I did happen to find a show with a somewhat similar premise, but I enjoyed it much more because of the depth of character development. It is a new show created by Idol creator, Simon Fuller: If I Can Dream. It follows the lives of several artists (musicians, chefs, models, actors) as they try to make it in Southern California.

The show seems to be a cross between American Idol, The Real Life, and Big Brother.

If you go to their website, you can watch inside their house from live cameras 24/7.

As Idol dies off, I think you will see shows just like If I Can Dream gain in popularity. Here is an episode of the show for those of you who want to check it out (come here to watch if you can’t see the video):

Any thoughts?

I quit American Idol a few seasons ago. These are definitely some great reasons why. They have helped a lot of musicians get their foot in the door though.

I can’t see it lasting many seasons longer, especially if Simon leaves.

I will say that Tim Urban did a good job last night. With him, you get a flash of brilliance once in a blue moon.

Crystal Bowersox is the only reason why I still watch the show.

Couldn’t agree more. I was hoping Andrew was going to be my guy, but he has failed to deliver.
    Lame

We were right on the verge of quitting. The last two weeks have actually saved the season for me. Casey, Crystal and Lee have all stepped up. Casey James covering Jealous Guy is maybe the best thing I’ve ever heard on that show (save David Cook doing Mariah Carey).

And believe it or not, Tim Urban has started to play really well. Two solid weeks. I wouldn’t mind him sticking around one more week.

Crystal is the only one who deserves to win. And because of that, she probably won’t.

I’m glad that my wife and daughter enjoy watching Idol, but frankly- Randy Jackson has a REAL hard time stringing a complete sentence together and Ellen doesn’t know a thing about the music business. The few times I’ve been forced to watch have been agony, sheer agony, as these (mostly) talentless performers try to find what combination of “making it song your own” and “showing some variety” will please the “judges” this week. Popularity contest-NOT. I’m firmly convinced that the outcome has been decided well in advance by the folks that pay for it-the sponsors.

I quit American Idol after the very first episode… I am a little critical and mean-spirited though.

I’ve caught bits and pieces of this season, and it only confirmed what I had been feeling, which is that talent is not looked highly upon anymore.

I don’t say that as if I’m better, but out of comparison to other seasons. Some of the previous contestants who didn’t come close to winning would kill all the ones now.

Give me real talent on television, like Dog the Bounty Hunter, bruddah. :)

@bobby the only reason I don’t think that the sponsors have full control is because “vote for the worst” seemed to pull so much weight, at least for a while.

I agree, well said. I haven’t watched for several weeks. I might tune in for the finale — but that episode in particular is always drawn out to the point of insanity.

Even though I still watch each week, it is definitely obvious the show has run it’s course and it’s time to move on. It’s completely unfortunate that they havent taken advantage of a whole new side of the show that could have been presented through social media.

To be honest, I would be way more interested in seeing what happens behind the scenes, like the process of song selection up to performance day dress rehearsals. They could have easily taken a huge advantage of all the never before seen process instead of milking things the same exact way for the past 9 years. Im glad If I Can Dream provides the idea of this but still doesnt have the same impact as it would have if American Idol would have done something similar.

I must say though. I tune in everyday to see what’s going on with Alex Lambert in the If I Can Dream house. Lovin that kid!

ALl your points are exactly the points why I’m getting tired of it as well. I still watch some performers, but it’s hard to watch the whole show.

As you mentioned it would be great if they invested more in the contestants, not just singing but as artists. That us the reason why I like X-Factor more than I like Idol. It will start next year and on it the judges are also mentors to the contestants, helping them through the weeks, being there for them and even helping them choose songs.

I heard a rumor that next year will be Idol’s 10th and last season and that instead of just replacing Simon with another permanent judge the plan was to have a different guest judge each week, someone with heavy experience in the industry and even some previous winners that have become actually famous: Kelly and Carrie, I guess.

    Let’s see what happens.

Also, I love that Alex Lambert got a chance to be on ‘If I can Dream’ after getting eliminated from IDol, he’s awesome. Looks scared all the time but still, has an awesome voice.

I quit watching because we gave up cable… and thus the DVR.

Basically anything that’s not available to watch online I don’t watch anymore. It’s a little freeing actually.

I’m one of those people who spends a combined 1.7 hours of watching Idol in the last five years.

One was when the (TRUE) idol…William Hung was on.
The other one was when Kathrine McPhee sang before the final cut.

I agree with you Tyler. I’ve been losing interest too. This group seems like retreads from previous years. No one really new or original this year. Perhaps the thrill is gone.

TV just gets better and better. Seacrest is crazy.
