How Do You Come to Faith?

I heard a well-known pastor during his sermon say that faith only comes through hearing God’s Word. In a way he was justifying his long messages in the statement.

So I ask you…

Does faith come only through hearing God’s Word?

(I think of God’s Word here as either reading the Bible or listening to a spoken message based on the Bible, even though I do not believe that to be the full extent of God’s Word, only that the pastor referred to God’s Word as such.)

I would agree with the statement faith comes only through hearing God’s word, but I’d also change what is meant by God’s word to God’s Word, that is the Word is Jesus.

Otherwise, what do we do with the stories of conversion of those who’ve never heard the Bible but have encountered the living God? That is to say, the written word is important, but it’s important because it points us to the Word.

I had a friend in class reference Romans 10:17 as it related to this question. He’s smarter than I am.

I would say that depends on how you read that passage though. As I understand it, Paul is addressing whether Israel really had a chance to hear the message and concludes that the Prophets were sharing the same message.

But even if we take it on face value, what is the message? Is it the written word? Or is it the story of Jesus?

Faith is a gift of God that he gives, I am not sure that it “has to be” actual scripture. Although I strongly believe that it does.

Tyler, if you’re referring to the act of accepting Christ as savior, I disagree. A good friend of mine serves as a missionary in Indonesia, and has told me numerous stories of people coming to faith in that country because the Savior met them in a dream.

    Tyler:

Faith does not always come from literally hearing with our ears. If it did, then how do people who are deaf come to faith ?!

There are many ways to “hear” from God without always relying on the use of audible sensation such as reading the Bible or praying.
