Fortuitous Bouncing

I learned one blogging lesson this week…if you want a lot of comments, have an opinion about Rob Bell. Seriously…Thanks to ALL of you, for your thoughts and for your grace in light of my confession. Like I said in one of the comments: I stand by my thoughts during my conversation with Ash, but I care much more about the follow up post.

  1. Relevant Magazine is doing an awesome series called “7 Burning Questions.” Their panel (Nancy Ortberg, Shane Claiborne, Brian McLaren, Chuck Colson, and others) is full of people who have my respect. Their article on gay rights is definitely worth a read.
  2. This picture continues to confuse my brain. What do you think?
  3. I created a Facebook photo album from my trip to Chi-Town.
  4. This one is hard to read. An article on rape being a way of life for women in Darfur.
  5. I’m playing and singing a song by myself on Sunday that I heard for the first time 4 days ago. Can you say nervous?
  6. Chris Tomlin has a new single out from his cd that comes out in September. I haven’t bought it yet, but this guy loves it.
  7. Here are the chances you are going to hell.
  8. If you don’t have Firefox 3, you must get it. Here is a cool video highlighting some of the new features.
  9. In a similar vein to my apology about Rob Bell, Anne Jackson has apologized for dogging on Joel Osteen.
  10. Hillsong has a new cd coming out (no surprise there), but this video on how the album came to be was just incredible. You gotta watch it.

I’d love to invite you to upload any original songs that are well produced to worshipsong.com. It’s a place for your songs to be heard and for you to be able to sell downloadable mp3′s rhythm charts, etc.

    Blessings…

So many options to comment about! Yikes!
I selected one: the gay rights issue, because it is currently REALLY tugging on my heart. I read through the various panelists comments and found them to be well thought through and insightful. The quote that I am most in rhythmn with is from Shane Claiborne,

“I had all these ideas about homosexuality and civil union and gay when I was in high school, and then I met a kid who was attracted to other men and he told me that he felt God had made a mistake when He made him and that he wanted to kill himself. If that brother can’t find a home in the Church, then I wonder who have we become.”

It is a privilege to minister on the prayer team. It is also a heavy, heavy burden. With it comes the wrenching revelations of persons who say things like what is written above. This was expecially true in my decade leading the student prayer ministries. I don’t think the problems are less outside of student-age ministry. Young and older adults have learned reason to fear admitting/sharing their struggles and keep it more to themselves.

It is not exclusive to gay inclinations or predispositions, though. It can be compulsive cutting, eating disorders, being wired with mental health disorders, substance abuse, violence craving, pornography, physical impairments, learning disabilites, grotesque physical features . . . so many things, that cause one to say, “I am not straight enough, pretty enough, thin enough, type-A enough, smart enough, fast enough, trendy enough, clear-thinking enough, to be accepted into the arms of the church and God. God made a huge mistake with me.”

The truth is, I sincerely believe that most of the family of Christ wants to be welcoming and a safe haven. We want to love first. We want to honor God’s command to love others, because He loves even us! That is not the image that is being grasped by the community about the church and we are the advertisement for God’s love. We are the ones responsible to say, “God did not make a mistake when He made you!”

    Hi Tyler,

How’d the song go? Which song was it?

I’ve been listening to Matt Maher’s CD Empty and Beautiful this week, good stuff, not sure how much is congregation singable.

    Blessings.
