Tour of Portland in 5 Hours

On Saturday my sister and her good friend were up from San Diego and Long Beach. I had promised a tour of Portland to all the best places. We had 5 hours to get the whole “tour of Portland” in, so I was definitely crunched for time. Here was our agenda.

Rose and I live in Beaverton, we had a short drive to the east side to get our morning coffee at what I consider the best coffee in the world. I’ve never had better.

From there we had a short drive and then a short hike to my favorite viewpoint of Portland. Yeah…I know Council Crest and Pittock Mansion have better views, but Mt. Tabor has a better park.

After that we just drove down the hill to the Hawthorne district and had lunch at the Bagdad Pub run by McMenamins. Rose had the hummus plate and I had the Communication Breakdown burger. ‘Twas a good lunch.

We then hopped over to the other side of the river and it started raining (we’re in Oregon remember) as we were walking to the Portland Saturday Market.

And our last stop was maybe the most obvious one: Powell’s Books. They have something like a trillion books. Not kidding.

I’m fairly sure I could live in the Red Room if needed.

So…those of you who know Portland well. What did we miss on this tour of Portland?

Keep in mind…we had 5 hours. It was a lot of fun.

Um well, Portland is the City of Roses so the one thing you might have missed is the Rose Garden but probably not much blooming up there yet. Light rail? The OHSU tram? Little time, not great weather, I think you did a pretty good job….

Roses aren’t really blooming yet. Another few weeks and they will be. We did ride the max for about 3 minutes. OHSU tram isn’t free…and I’m stingy.

A few places come to mind -

    Voodoo donut
    Laurelhurst Park
    Pioneer Courthouse Square

voodoo had a massive line otherwise we would have gone there.

laurelhurst is good, but I’m a Tabor fan myself…because of the view.

We did drive by Pioneer Square, but that doesn’t really count.

    Chinese garden in Chinatown.
McMinns Edgefield- except you only had five hours.
    OMSI

This would be on a 6 hour schedule – following the farmer’s market and powell’s, dinner at Kennedy School (lunch and dinner provided by McMenamin’s!).

Other than that, you made a fantastic tour guide.

  • Christy Polek

Wow. Now I feel like I almost don’t need to move there…
    almost.

Tyler, my little sister is going to nursing school in Portland. I haven’t made it up there for a visit yet, but when I do, you’re going to have to meet me at Stumptown Coffee!
