Giving It Up

All of us have luxuries that we are used to living with. Some of us have more than others, but considering shelter and food are the only tangible “things” we really need, there is a lot that we have that is extra stuff.

What is the one tangible thing you could most easily give up?

TV/Cable….didn’t have it for the last five years, and just got it when we bought our house last March. Love it, but don’t need it. I really wouldn’t care if we cut it off tomorrow. Well, after the tourney….

I was struggling to decide if tv or internet is more valuable to me at home. Hard to say. Luckily the tournament games are all online so you wouldn’t have to have tv to watch.

I could do without television. In fact, I keep weighing the possibility of getting rid of it and saving myself $80-$90 a month. The thing is, I watch a total of 2 network shows (24 & Lost) and they’re both available to watch online the day after they air.

For the good of my neighbors, I would add clothing to your list of tangible necessities.

Our lives are already fairly basic. We recently gave up our cable. This was easy since we hardly watched TV. I guess in order the next items would be:

    Our smart phones.
    Our internet connection.

I despise the intrusiveness of the phone. To set boundaries for it I limit its usage. I won’t answer a call or text someone when I am meeting with someone else. When I am able (at work or home) I generally put it down and avoid looking at it in order to be fully present with my wife, kids or coworkers. It is too easy to check out twitter, text someone or surf the internet when I should be engaged in the moment. When I have to hold on to it, I silence it and forget about it.

In the last year I gave up my car. My husband and I still have a vehicle but it was very hard for me to give up the independence of having my own car. There are many luxuries I could name that are not necessary to my life but I have: cable TV and premium channels, meat, my iPhone, Netflix, magazine subscriptions, cocktails, but the one thing I would give up first, the thing that is truly a luxury, is our house cleaning service.

I gave up cable last week, it’s already making a big difference in my life.
